What is your fear when you are working on your car?

Oppo- had this thought today when flushing my heater core and it worked! It's so nice to have heat in Pittsburgh now, last week was fucking terrible when it was -7 (luckily my commute is like 12 minutes, so dressing warmly worked). However, I was also met with my fear when working on cars, so i was wondering what other opponauts have as a fear.

Personally, the mechanical fan is my number 1 fear. For some reason, anytime I'm near it i feel like it'll randomly start and catch a hand, or when its running and I'm looking under the hood, that it will disconnect and hit me (final fantasy style). No clue why, but that is the one thing that gets to me. Having the car in the air and being under it is fine, but start that thing and my fear level goes through the roof.

I am terrified of running out of blinking fluid.

I just lived mine not but an hour ago. Car fell off the jacks with the driver-side front wheel off, and the rotor nearly took my foot. @_@

I'm scared of breaking all my bumper clips.

The fear is real.

Not trying to make your fear worse, but fear of fans, pulleys, and belts is completely rational. I had a buddy who lost the tip of his pinky when got caught on a moving belt. A healthy fear/respect of moving parts might have prevented that.

I'm afraid of messing up something due to my lack of experience and understanding of the components, especially if what I messed up was fine to begin with.

Two fears: car falling off jack stands/lift (which seems pretty reasonable) and losing vision as a result of getting some fluid in my eye (didn't wear eye protection until I almost got a cascade of gasoline in my eyes).

my biggest fear would have to be that i'm misdiagnosing & whatever i'm doing won't fix the problem...it's happened, but not too often.

Door panels. They scare me: I hope I'll never need again to remove one. Those fuckin' plastic plugs!

I managed to get myself stuck under a car once when I was snaking my arms up in to replace a starter. Like, physically stuck. It was a very strange sensation to be in no danger, but unable to get out. I'm not prone to claustrophobia, but I had to close my eyes, take a few deep breaths and focus on remembering how I got my arms up in there. I finally extricated myself, but my instinct was to just rip my arm out regarless of the lost flesh. I couldn't get back under the car for a couple hours until I had calmed down.

Biggest fear? Stripping a bolt.
Biggest irrational fear? That the car will fall off the jackstands while I am underneath (shudder). This is why I'm getting a Jeep next.

Those things are a horror, made of high grade titanium until you are on the last one and it breaks, then they are all made of spaghetti noodles.

Fixing something and then screwing it up. Nothing worse then taking something into a shop that you tried to fix and have the mechanic stare back with a look of "what an idiot"

Two fears: breaking something more expensive than I wanted to originally replace and finding something else that needs fixed

My biggest is always breaking a bolt in a hard to reach place. It must be a northern thing, but some broken bolts really really suck. PB Blaster for LIFE!

If you shut the door too hard then it wasn't put on jack stands right then.

I will echo everyone's fear of my vehicle falling off a jack....or when I'm using Rhino Ramps, driving off them while trying to "mount" them. One of the main reasons I prefer working on my truck over my 9-2x....

Which brings me to my new found fear....fire. During these stupid cold temps we've been having in Michigan, the Saabaru started leaking gas from a poorly designed rubber fuel line whenever I start it. I've been putting off fixing it because A. it's a brutal job and B. my irrational fear that while gas is exposed, a spark from me dropping a wrench or whatever is going to cause my garage to burst into flames along with me in it. I've seen enough pictures of much nicer cars combust ON THEIR OWN on this site to be convinced it's a possibility....
